The ultimate purpose of art is transformation. My personal art is an expression of my ideas and deepest emotions translated into the physical world through the spontaneous process of painting. When I'm at work, thinking, feeling and painting are fused into one synonymous activity.
My approach is the opposite of conceptual art. I do not start with any preconceived form, allowing the painting to grow freely and intuitively through the creative process. Brilliant color, strong gestural brush strokes, organic shapes and bold contrasts of dark and light evolve into balanced compositions. "The act of painting" is the real subject of my work, and the end result becomes a physical object because of the interconnectedness of process, materials and self.
I do not paint visual stories or works that beam out messages. In my opinion, to see or perceive only with the eyes borders on blindness. A synthesis of all the senses is a prerequisite if true inner vision is to be achieved. That's my intention. I want my aesthetic visions to reach out and stimulate and communicate with the inner eye of the viewer.
Since coming to California in 1977, I've created many distinct ongoing series of paintings based on themes indigenous to the area. All of them are abstract; none contains recognizable imagery; but each expresses its essence. Included: Open Window, Hollywood, La Brea, Pacific Rim, Omni Tabularasa, In Praise of Freedom, Pacific Palisades and Death Valley.
Since painting is my way of life, I continue all the series and search for new directions.
